The National Day of Catalonia is celebrated on September 11, 2017 and is also known as the Diada. It commemorates the defeat of the troops of the Crown of Aragon at the hands of the French and Spanish army at the siege of Barcelona on this day in 1714. It is a public holiday on which every corner in Catalonia is bedecked with the red and yellow-striped Catalan flag, which is called the senyera. Numerous events take place, starting with a torch-lit procession on the 10th which pays tribute to the soldiers and civilians who died defending the besieged city. Other events include speeches, live music, poetry reading and floral tributes in front of the statue of Rafael Casanova.
